The Ismaili community’s spiritual leader, Prince Karim Aga Khan, died today at the age of 88. He was well-known for his spiritual counseling, development work, and charity. In the company of his loved ones, he passed away quietly in Lisbon, Portugal. By posting a statement from his charity on social media, his appointed successor announced his passing.

Prince Aga Khan was born in Geneva on December 13, 1936, and grew up in Nairobi, Kenya. After relocating to Switzerland, he attended the esteemed Le Rosey School before enrolling at Harvard University to study Islamic history.

Following the passing of his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan, in 1957, he assumed the role of Imam of Ismailis at the age of twenty. When Karim’s great-great-grandfather married the emperor’s daughter in the 1830s, the Emperor of Persia gave him this title, which he was the fourth to hold. The video can be found at this link:a
